Shopify Product CSV Checker › Guides
Many values in a Shopify product CSV look fine in a spreadsheet but don't follow the format Shopify expects. The most common are prices, true/false columns, and long numbers that Excel rewrites. Here's what Shopify specifies for each.
For Price, Compare-at price and Cost per item, Shopify says to include only the monetary value, without a currency symbol, for example 9.99. A blank Price defaults to 0.00, so an empty cell won't throw an error, but the product will be priced at zero.
$1,299.00 → 1299.00USD 24.50 → 24.50Compare-at price too. It's meant to show the original price when the item is discounted.Watch out for decimal commas. A value like 19,99 could mean 19.99 or 1999, depending on where the file came from. Only you know which one is right.
Several columns take true or false. Shopify lists these defaults:
Published on online store: true (default) or falseCharge tax: true (default) or falseRequires shipping: true (default) or falseGift card: false (default) or true. You can't create a gift card through CSV import. Some similar columns use words instead of true/false:
Continue selling when out of stock: deny (default) or continueStatus: active, draft or archived. If the column is present, every row needs a value.Weight unit for display: g, kg, lb or ozReplace Yes/No, Y/N and other variations with these exact values.
Weight value (grams) takes only a number in grams, with no unit and no decimals. Shopify's examples: 5.125 kg becomes 5125, and 4 lb becomes 1814.
Excel often shows long numeric codes in scientific notation, so 840123456789 appears as 8.40E+11. If the file is saved like that, the original digits are gone and can't be restored from the file. To avoid it:
E+ values, go back to the original source data (your supplier sheet or old platform export) and copy the real codes in again. Also remember that SKU can't be blank if you use a custom fulfillment service. In the Barcodes column, separate multiple barcodes with semicolons (up to 20).
Fixes automatically:
$1,299.00 → 1299.00).Yes/Y to true and No/N to false. TRUE/FALSE are left as they are, because Shopify's own sample file uses them.lbs → lb).12.0 → 12 in quantity, grams and image position.Reports without changing:
